Biography:
From the day Professor Johnny Poon set foot in academia, through his years as an accomplished musician, a devoted teacher and an impassioned academic leader, he remains a vehement advocate for academic research—a panacea that acts as an agent of change in an increasingly complex world. As Associate Vice-President (Interdisciplinary Research), he oversees the development of six interdisciplinary research laboratories, exemplifying the University’s commitment to create the best conditions for generating groundbreaking research for society.
In his own research, Professor Poon focuses on interdisciplinary projects that would break traditional artistic and disciplinary boundaries. He aims to invent radical concepts, techniques and advance the future of creative practice that would help enhance the ways people think, express and communicate ideas and emotions. Recently, he has contributed to the rediscovery and a modern adaptation of an 18th-century opera by Antonio Caldara. This research delivers the first performance edition of the opera since its premiere in 1735, and it gives voice to the actual sound of the music that was previous unknown to scholars and modern audience. He further expands the artistic property of this opera by designing a new performance model that puts the historical text of this centuries-old music within a larger time and cultural continuum through new interfaces of dance, theatre, visual media, and AI technologies.

Two Decades of Graphene: Perspective for Industrial Scale Applications

Prof SHEN Zexiang
•    Associate Dean (Interdisciplinary Programme) Graduate College, Nanyang Technological University
•    Professor, School of Physical & Mathematical Sciences - Division of Physics & Applied Physics

Abstract:
Graphene is an extraordinary material, boasting unparalleled mechanical strength, ballistic conductivity, and superior thermal and corrosion resistance. Despite these properties, it has yet to achieve widespread industrial adoption since its discovery over two decades ago. Alongside advancing fundamental research, my group places strong emphasis on engaging and preparing PhD students for industry scale applications and innovation, exposing them early to real world constraints, scale up challenges, and translational pathways.

In this talk, we will explore the shifting landscape of graphene’s industrial prospects. We will demonstrate how graphene composites significantly enhance the strength, thermal conductivity, and manufacturability of polymers—making them ideal for high-growth sectors like robotics, EVs, and 3D printing. In the construction industry, graphene-enhanced concrete offers a dual advantage: a 30% reduction in CO2 emission and a 150% increase in structural lifespan, all while remaining commercially viable. Furthermore, I will discuss graphene’s role in high-performance coatings—improving UV resistance, anti-bacterial properties, anti-corrosion and hydrophobicity for both marine and terrestrial use. Finally, we will present our results on graphene films for robust EMI shielding in communication technologies.

Ultimately, after 20 years of research, graphene powder and liquid solutions are finally reaching a tipping point for large-scale, real-world applications. Supported by a training model that equips PhD researchers with the skills and experience needed to bridge laboratory innovation and industrial deployment, members in our group have been engaged in consultation for companies, innovation-driven competition as well as setting up companies.

Transforming Together: Building a Connected Future of Graduate Research Training

Prof Carolin PLEWA
•    Pro Vice Chancellor, Graduate Research Training, Research and Innovation, Adelaide University

Abstract:
Graduate researchers are central to the future of our society, as emerging research and innovation leaders across academia, industry, government, and the broader community. As global challenges increase in complexity and scale, research training has never been more critical. It not only equips individuals with the mindset and skills they need to advance knowledge and create solutions; it inspires and empowers them to help address pressing complex societal needs.

Indeed, graduate research lies at the nexus of universities’ key roles: discovery and innovation—enabling people to imagine and shape the future through research that is connected and applied for positive change; human and social capital—preparing learners for diverse opportunities as responsible, motivated citizens ready to question and contribute; global futures—fostering collaboration across borders and inspiring globally engaged citizens; and social futures—serving as anchors for communities, offering stability and inspiration while advancing societal priorities such as the Sustainable Development Goals.

To harness these opportunities requires a continued evolution of the graduate researcher experience and environment. Beyond the pursuit of excellence, our graduate researchers deserve an experience grounded in connection, collaboration, and community. By strengthening connection between graduate research and society, prioritising collaboration across disciplines, sectors, and nations, and fostering inclusive research and innovation communities, we can broaden participation and enable every graduate researcher to realise their full potential. In doing so, we move towards a more connected, confident, and valued research and innovation community — one that not only advances knowledge but actively shapes a future in which research and innovation are valued, shared, and deliver meaningful societal impact.
