The Language Centre is organising the seventh research presentation competition for HKBU research postgraduate students: the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) Speech Competition. Participants are required to submit a 3-minute video presentation about their research, using language that is understandable to a layperson. Outstanding presenters will be selected to join the Grand Final on 11 May. Finalists can win a research travel grant of up to HKD 8,000, which can be used for attending international conferences or covering research publication-related costs. Register by 8 March (Sunday)!

The Health and Medical Research Fund is organising a Journal Club on Rare Disease on 12 December (Friday) at the Research and Data Analytics Office of the Health Bureau and via Zoom. The session will cover topics including the client service receipt inventory for rare genetic diseases in Hong Kong, the socio-economic burden and health-related quality of life in patients with rare diseases in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Sociological Association’s 26th Annual Conference will be held on 6 December 2025 at HKBU, under the theme "Navigating a Changing World: Comparative Perspectives on Social Structures and Inequalities." Professor Man-Yee Kan, from the Department of Sociology at the University of Oxford, has been invited to speak on the topic: "Gender Differences in Leisure Time in East Asian and Western Societies." The conference is now calling for abstracts. The deadline for abstract submission is 19 September 2025, with a maximum length of 300 words. Students are warmly encouraged to share their insights and be part of this important dialogue shaping the future of sociology.

Deep learning underpins numerous artificial intelligence (AI) applications, which have proven to be practical and powerful tools in many domains in the past decade, including computer vision, natural language processing, and healthcare. Moreover, pioneers of AI won the 2024 Nobel Prizes in Chemistry and Physics. Recent advances in generative AI technology and large-scale foundation models have led to rapid changes in the biomedical AI research paradigm, especially over the past two years. Accordingly, the proposed Advanced Study Institute (ASI) will bring six pioneering and world-famous scientists to give lectures on the latest developments in biomedical AI.
