The University’s Transdisciplinary Research initiative prominently includes four University Research Clusters. We invite applications for the PhD Transdisciplinary Research Scholarship Scheme, aiming at admitting exceptional PhD students.
Transdisciplinary Doctoral Project-based Training
The Scheme entails practical and intensive research training, engaging students in transdisciplinary research projects during their first year of studies. In addition to acquiring research knowledge, this project-based doctoral research training also aims to enhance students’ language, writing, presentation and analytical skills, along with other essential soft skills. This foundation is crucial for their future research endeavours.
To strengthen research coherence and foster collaborative expertise, the University has identified the following four strategic Research Clusters:
- Creative Media/Practice
- Health and Drug Discovery
- Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence in X (where X denotes applications such as journalism, business and finance)
- Humanities and Cultures

Academic Qualifications
Applicants should possess:
- a Master’s degree from a recognised university or a comparable institution; or
- a Bachelor’s degree with first-class honours from a recognised university or a comparable institution.
Language Proficiency Requirements
Applicants seeking admission on the basis of a qualification from a university or a comparable institution whose language of teaching and/or examination is not English is required to obtain:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) at a minimum of 79 (IBT)#, or
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS)# at a minimum of 6.5.
#Sub-score requirements of TOEFL (at least 18 for Reading, Listening and Speaking, and 19 for Writing) or IELTS (at least 5.5 for Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing).
While the existing University admission requirements must be met, applicants demonstrating the following qualifications/capacity will be accorded with higher priority:
- Alignment of Research Interests: Relevancy of research interests to the University’s Transdisciplinary Research Clusters;
- Academic Achievements: Notable accomplishments in relevant research areas, including strong academic records, publications in reputable journals, and experience presenting at esteemed conferences, etc. Students who have not met the University's admission requirements are not considered;
- Institutional Reputation: The academic standing of the applicants’ previous universities/institutions.

- Indicate your research interest and proposed supervisor in your online application
- Attach necessary supporting documents
- Submit your application
Applicants are encouraged to discuss the research proposal with their potential Principal Supervisors before submitting the applications. The proposed research should align with the strategic Research Clusters of the University.
Result Announcement
Successful applicants will receive an email notification. Applicants who do not hear from us by 31 July 2025 may consider their applications unsuccessful.
