Highlights of the New RPg Student Orientation Day by the Graduate School on 25 Aug 2026

The Graduate School welcomed our new cohort with a full-day kick-off across the Institute of Transdisciplinary Studies (ITS) Programme Orientation in the morning and the Research Postgraduate (RPg) Orientation in the afternoon.

In the ITS Orientation, Prof Cheung King-ho, Executive Associate Dean of the Graduate School and ITS Programme Director, opened the session with a programme overview and the unique, project-based doctoral training model. Twenty students introduced themselves and shared their backgrounds, followed by introductions of our Principal Supervisors and Course Instructors for the ITS introductory lectures. Current ITS student, Mr Li Xuan from the Department of Computer Science shared an inspiring look into his research on Trustworthy ML for Bioinformatics Discovery, sharing key insights and lessons from his academic path. The orientation concluded with an engaging Q&A, a group photo, and a light lunch networking session.

In the afternoon for all the new RPg students, Prof Lyu Aiping, Vice-President (Research and Development) cum Dean of the Graduate School, and Prof Cheung King-ho offered warm welcomes and an opening speech. The session featured practical briefings to support a smooth start: Ms Kit Ng (Assistant Academic Registrar) on the RPg study journey; Prof Amy Lee (Director of Student Affairs) on student wellbeing and services; Ms Tiffany Chan (Library Officer of HKBU Library) on the Integrated Research Information and Management System (IRIMS); and Prof Chris Wong (Director of LSMS) on facilities at the Advanced Life Sciences and Mass Spectrometry Laboratory (LSMS). The afternoon was wrapped up with refreshments and networking with faculty representatives and GS Student Ambassadors.

Prof Lyu Aiping, Vice-President (Research and Development) cum Dean of the Graduate School delivered a welcoming remarks to all the new RPg students.
