Grooming Future Experts: HKBU International Advisors for Graduate Studies Shed Light on Best Practices of Doctoral Training

"Our PhD students will one day become our teachers, experts in their respective fields." shared by Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) Provost Prof. Martin Wong, as the university convened its two-day annual meeting of the International Advisory Board for Graduate Studies (IAB) on June 19-20, 2024.

Following the IAB's establishment in 2023, this year's meeting saw the participation of renowned scholar representatives from six world-class member universities, including Fudan University, Imperial College London, Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore, University of Science and Technology of China, and Zhejiang University (in alphabetical order). Chaired by Prof. Wong and VPRD Prof. Aiping Lyu, the members engaged in insightful discussions on the latest trends and best practices for doctoral education, with a focus on interdisciplinary development and industry engagement.

The IAB representatives were captivated during a guided tour of HKBU's state-of-the-art research facilities, spanning the university's Kowloon Tong campus and cutting-edge laboratories at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park. From traditional Chinese medicine and drug development to innovative art-tech and health sciences initiatives, the representatives witnessed HKBU's visionary approach to strengthening its doctoral programmes through interdisciplinary research.

Notably, HKBU's talented research students seized the opportunity to showcase their innovative work and engage in inspiring cross-disciplinary conversations with the esteemed scholars during a poster presentation session, under the four Research Clusters, enriching their learning experience as part of the university's robust doctoral education.

The event underscored HKBU's steadfast commitment to grooming future experts across diverse disciplines, leveraging the guidance and expertise of its distinguished international advisory board. As the university continues to push the boundaries of doctoral education, it remains dedicated to cultivating the next generation of world-class scholars and leaders through interdisciplinary collaboration with renowned global partners.
